Conservation & Listed Buildings

We work with listed and historic buildings to repair, refurbish and adapt them for continued use. Our projects range from individual houses and mews buildings to workplaces and rural estates, balancing the significance of existing fabric with the practical requirements of contemporary life.

We believe conservation is an essential part of sustainability. By understanding a building's history, construction and character, we can make considered changes that improve comfort and performance while retaining the qualities that make it distinctive.

Approach

Every historic building requires its own understanding. We begin by considering its history, significance, condition and construction, identifying what should be retained or repaired and where change can be accommodated. New interventions are developed to sit comfortably alongside the existing fabric, remaining legible and reversible where appropriate.

Improving comfort and energy performance is an important part of this work. We consider insulation, moisture movement, ventilation and building services carefully, particularly where traditional construction is involved. Our Director, Martin Flett, is an RIAS Accredited Conservation Architect, and we work with specialist consultants and craftspeople where required.

How We Work

We provide architectural services from initial assessments and feasibility studies through planning permission, listed building consent, building warrant and technical design, with construction-stage services where commissioned.

Working closely with clients, conservation officers, engineers and specialist consultants, we develop proposals that balance the architectural and historic significance of each building with practical considerations of cost, construction and long-term use.
