Rural Buildings & Conversions

We work with agricultural and rural buildings to repair, adapt and bring them into new use. From barns and steadings to buildings within larger rural estates, each project begins with an understanding of the existing structure, its character and its relationship to the surrounding landscape.

We look for opportunities to retain and make use of what is already there, introducing considered changes that support contemporary living and other new uses. Our approach brings together careful repair, natural materials and improvements to comfort and energy performance, while retaining the qualities that make rural buildings distinctive.

Selected Projects

Approach

Traditional rural buildings often have a simplicity and robustness that provide a strong starting point for adaptation. We begin by understanding their construction, condition and history, identifying which elements should be retained or repaired and where new openings, spaces or interventions can be accommodated.

Improving comfort and performance is an important part of this work. We consider insulation, airtightness, ventilation and moisture management carefully, particularly where traditional stone and masonry construction is involved. New work is developed in response to the existing building and its setting, with attention to materials, landscape and the practical requirements of rural locations.

How We Work

We provide architectural services from initial building assessments and feasibility studies through concept design, planning permission, listed building consent where required, building warrant and technical design, with construction-stage services where commissioned.

Rural conversions often involve complex existing fabric, planning considerations and infrastructure requirements. We work closely with clients, engineers, planners and specialist consultants to develop coordinated proposals that balance architectural quality with practical considerations of cost, programme and construction.
