Studio
Ossian is an Edinburgh-based architecture practice working across architecture, conservation and interiors. We design new buildings and carefully adapt existing ones, with projects throughout Scotland and beyond.
Our work ranges from individual houses and interiors to rural estates, workplaces and cultural buildings. Design quality is central, supported by technical rigour and a practical understanding of how buildings are made, used and maintained.
Approach
Design
We begin by understanding the site, the brief and how a building will be used. For new projects this means considering landscape, orientation, form and materials; for existing buildings, the condition and significance of the fabric. Drawings, models and conversations help us test ideas and explain choices as the design develops.
Delivery
As an RIBA and RIAS Chartered Practice, we work from early feasibility and briefing through planning, Listed Building Consent and Building Warrant to technical design and construction. We collaborate with engineers, cost consultants, contractors and specialist craftspeople, considering cost, buildability and maintenance alongside design.
Areas of Practice
New Buildings
Our approach to new buildings begins with their setting and purpose. We consider space, light, orientation, materials and construction together, with energy demand addressed from the earliest stages of design.
Adaptation & Conservation
With RIAS Accredited Conservation Architect expertise, we consider what can be retained, repaired or upgraded before making changes to existing buildings. Our work combines an understanding of historic fabric and significance with the interventions needed to support continued use.
Interiors
We treat interiors as an integral part of architecture, from the arrangement of spaces to materials, joinery, lighting and detail. This work spans homes, hospitality, workplaces and other building types.
Long-term Thinking
As a Certified B Corporation, we take environmental and social responsibility seriously. In our projects, this means looking first at opportunities for re-use, then at building fabric, energy demand, materials and servicing. We favour durable, repairable construction and natural materials where appropriate, with attention to long-term maintenance and adaptability.
